Update Waaaahhhh most definitely not picnic weather. Rescheduling for Sept 12!

Location Kelley Point Park, Where Columbia Blvd and Marine Drive meet

Meet at the Peninsula Park gazebo and we'll depart at 5.

    Organizer Nancy Myers

    Time Fri, Aug 15, 2025, 4:45 PM

Time details Depart Peninsula Park at 5, depart Columbia Park around 5:30, arrive at KPP around 6:15-6:30.

End location End location: I'm aiming for picnic area F: ride all the way into the park to the circular drive at the end, and head into the forest on the paved path. Ride past the bathrooms, and picnic area F is 100ish yards past them, on the right.

Kelley Point Park is the very tip of the long peninsula that is North Portland and it's a hidden gem with plenty of shade cover, winding paths, cozy beaches on both rivers, and really decent bike access to it. Did I mention bunnies? Loads of bunnies there too. So let's have a potluck dinner this summer! The route will start at Peninsula Park, make a stop in Columbia Park to pick up additional riders, and meander through quiet neighborhoods, along bike paths, and past Smith & Bybee Lakes. It's about 9 miles one way (7 from Columbia Park) but easy riding. The last couple miles are a bit of a slog along Marine Drive but the path is fabulous and it makes the destination that much more appreciated. Potluck: Bring dinner. Bring your own plates etc. Bring something to share. This will be a true luck-of-the-pot: I'm not orchestrating anything like Aunt Claire used to do for Thanksgiving, sheesh. I'll provide a pre-heated grill (probably charcoal, and with a designated meat-free section) and a few necessary utensils if you really want to cook something. I'll also bring water, maybe lemonade, maybe...I dunno...root beer floats? Watermelon? Classic summertime fare. Note that although we're on a beach, swimming is strongly discouraged at this location. 'Best not to risk it. We'll wrap up 8ish, and the return is up to you - retrace the route, or head into St. Johns for your next adventure. Message me if you have notions, questions, suggestions. It'll be lovely!
