2nd Annual Pickleball Ride Bring your best self and your most creative trash talk, big swings, even bigger misses, laughter, and high-fives. We can fit a max of 16 people onto 4 courts. Please sign up here and let me know if you can bring some of the listed items: https://tinyurl.com/PPDXpickleball Last year we started at Mount Tabor tennis courts to play in daylight, then rode to Laurelhurst and had a ton of fun playing in the dark with lots of portable lighting. We’ll do the same this year, except we’re adding a twist to the daylight session: Crazy Rules! I have a list of rules, and we’ll introduce a rule or two once every 10 minutes; this way everyone gets to play a bit before learning new each rule. Examples: - The ā€œno volley zoneā€ (NVZ), also known as the ā€œkitchen,ā€ is still NVZ if you use your normal paddle, buuut … if you use a kitchen utensil or frying pan, you CAN volley in the kitchen. Using a cookie sheet is highly encouraged, and is worth 2 points if you hit a winning drop shot while yelling, ā€œBaker’s Dozen!ā€ Do you know how loud it gets when a cookie sheet hits a pickleball? I don’t, and can’t wait to find out. - Bicycles form the net. If you ā€œcall itā€, then hit a basket, handlebars, or bike seat with the ball, your team wins the point outright; if you hit a ball into a basket and it stays in, that makes it a basket ball, hence 2 points. - ā€œBody parts ruleā€; one can only guess, unless one joins this ride… - And other rules for max silliness and hopefully lots of laughs. I’ll bring line markers, a few paddles, and pickleballs like last year, but pls bring your own paddle if you have one. Even better: please bring KITCHEN utensils, cookie sheets, pots, and pans that can withstand pickleball hits. Please show up early to help set up our courts (I can’t set up everything quickly enough by myself). Thanks to everyone who helped last year! At Tabor we’ll start packing up a bit before sundown, then ride to Laurelhurst and set up glow-in-the-dark courts. We should have two portable nets for the two ā€œlines onlyā€ courts, plus two courts with permanent nets. Nighttime play will follow normal pickleball rules. For visibility, I’ll have lots of lights like last year: LED paddles, LED pickleballs, glow bracelets, EL wire to mark the net, UV reactive tape and UV lamps to make court lines glow, and other lights including a few disco lights. And probably some music, yeah music.
